Sue Strange

Imagination is the living power and prime agent of all human perception.
— Samuel Taylor Coleridge

I paint landscapes and seascapes, mostly inspired by Northern England and Scotland and occasional travels further afield. I like to use oil for its expressive possibilities but also enjoy watercolour, ink, charcoal and occasionally acrylic.

I usually work from sketches made on my many walks and explorations – these are like the skeletons on which I hang my imagination and emotions. Sometimes I make composite images where elements from more than one location are combined with memories to fully express my thoughts. I love to depict dramatic weather, storms approaching and receding, winter skies, wild water. My paintings reflect a deep emotional connection to the natural world and a keen response to the turning of the seasons.

My influences include William Turner, Samuel Palmer, William Blake, Richard Diebenkorn, Georgia O’Keefe and Yun Hyong-Keun.
